The City Is Coming to Erase It All is a follow-up to Fink's 2024 album Beauty In Your Wake and is inspired by Cornwall, the home region of singer-guitarist Fin Greenall.

The album was recorded in the Cornish village of Zennor. While making The City Is Coming to Erase It All, Greenall immersed himself in the culture of the Southwest, with references to artists such as Michael Chapman, particularly his 1970 album Fully Qualified Survivor, and the book The Plumed Serpent by author and Zennor resident D.H. Lawrence. He was also inspired by contemporary indie folk artists who have rejected city life in favor of isolation, such as Adrianne Lenker and Lorma. "I'm not looking for retro copies, because I already have albums by Michael Chapman and Joni Mitchell. I want something new, but something with the right atmosphere or the right approach," says Greenall.
