Agnes Obel's fourth album, successor to the acclaimed 'Myopia' from 2020, is titled 'The Meaning Of Flowers'. She found inspiration in a wide range of sources: her pregnancy, philosophers Hannah Arendt and Emanuele Coccia, poems by Enheduanna (the first writer with a name), and Danish pop from the 1980s.
'The Meaning Of Flowers' naturally possesses the characteristic fairytale atmosphere we have come to expect from Obel; she recorded the album alone in Berlin, seated at the piano, synthesizers, and samples. Guest musicians provided the additional coloring with cello, violin, lap steel guitar, flute, saxophone, and harmonium. 'The Meaning of Flowers' reflects the emotional impact of motherhood, Obel's intellectual interest in the subject—particularly Arendt's concept of 'natality'—the human capacity for a new beginning—and the fact that the temporarily altered neuroplasticity of her brain steered her thought and composition processes in new directions.
